Team India were disappointing on the opening day of the first Test against New Zealand. The Kiwis bowlers were troubled India early in the day, taking key wickets. Earlier, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and invited Team India to bat. The Indian team, who started the batting, were shocked at the start. Tim Southee bowled opener Prithwi sha (16; 2×4 off 18 balls).
The Kiwis bowlers then fought back with fireballs. Notably debutante bowler Kyle Jamieson (3/38) bowled superbly. Pujara (11) and skipper Kohli (2) immediately bowled out. Mayank Agarwal (34; 5×4 off 84 balls) and Ajinkya Rahane (40) were the only batsmen added runs on scoreboard. The duo added 48 runs for the fourth wicket.
