Telangana Student Shot Dead in US; Shushma Swaraj Expresses Condolences

In a tragic incident that occurred on Friday evening, a student from Telangana state was shot dead in the US, while in a restaurant. Sharath Koppu was a 26-year old software engineer, who recently turned student and was pursuing his Masters degree at the University of Missouri in Kansas, and happened to be at the J’s Fish and Chicken Market restaurant when he was assaulted. According to witnesses, five shots were fired at him from behind him. When the police arrived on the scene, they found Koppu laying in a pool of blood, and called emergency services to rush him to a hospital. Unfortunately, he was announced dead on arrival. The incident happened at around 7pm local time. So far, no suspect has been identified or taken into custody, and the reason behind this incident is not known.

 

India’s Minister of External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj, expressed her condolences at this incident tweeting, “My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. We will follow this up with the police and provide all assistance to the family.” The family has already requested Telangana state NRI Minister K.Y. Ramarao to look into the matter of returning their son’s body to them as soon as possible, so as to be able to perform the last rites.

 

At this time, no circulars or warnings have been issued by any authorities, Indian or foreign, following this incident. It has been considered a one-off tragic case, unless further evidence, and/or a suspect, is produced.
