He grew up in a religious family but studied several religious books and his knowledge prompted him to question the existence of God and believed in agnotism for some time. But he could not completely deny the fact of God’s supremacy. In 1880 he joined Nava Vidhan from Keshab Chandra Sen and became a member of Sadharan Brahmo Samaj, led by Keshab Chandra Sen and Debendranath Tagore.

Brahmo Samaj recognized a god other than idolatry. Vivekananda asked several questions. During his spiritual crisis, he first heard of Shri Ramakrishna from William Hastie, the rector of Scottish Church College. Finally he met Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa in the Dakshineshwar Kali Temple and Vivekananda asked him: “Have you seen God?” what he had asked so many spiritual leaders but was not satisfied. But when he asked Ramakrishna, he gave such a simple answer: “Yes, I did. I see God as clearly as I do, only in a much deeper sense.” After that Vivekananda started visiting Dakshineshwar and received several answers to the questions that came to his mind.

When Vivekananda’s father died, the whole family faced a financial crisis. He went to Ramakrishna and asked him to pray for his family, but Ramakrishna refused and told Vivekananda to pray to the goddess Kali. He couldn’t ask for wealth and money, but instead asked for conscience and privacy. On that day he was drawn with spiritual awakening and an ascetic way of life began. This was the turning point in his life and accepted Ramakrishna, his guru.

After Ramakrishna’s death, fifteen of his students, including Narendranath, began living together in Baranagar in northern Calcutta, known as Ramakrishna Math. In 1887, all disciples took monk vows and Narendranath appeared as Vivekananda, “the delight of knowing wisdom.” All of them practiced yoga and meditation. Vivekananda also left mathematics and decided to tour all of India on foot, which became known as “Parivrajak”.
